We’re excited to share that we’ve identified and named six new Hawksbill turtles which are long-term residents of the reefs surrounding Milaidhoo.
The Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is a critically endangered sea turtle so it’s lovely to see so many of them around here.
Sea Turtles can be distinguished and identified by the unique markings on their head. Here in the Maldives, turtle sightings are recorded in a nationwide database run by the Olive Ridley Project.
The great thing about this database is that each turtle can be identified and sightings recorded. And when anyone photographs a turtle for the first time, they can give this turtle a name.
So far we’ve been so lucky enough to identify and name these beautiful Hawksbill Sea Turtles that are residents of the surrounding reefs. Please give a warm Milaidhoo welcome to Crusty, Flori, Madhiri, Sam, Sirena and Swimerette.
