If you’re an animal lover, then Hanifaru Bay between June and November should be on your MUST visit list: it’s the only place in the world where you can see manta rays in such huge numbers in one place. It also has the added bonus of being a great place to look for whale sharks – the largest fish in the ocean!
Hanifaru Bay is in the heart of the Baa Atoll UNESCO World biosphere and is a quick speeboat ride from Milaidhoo Maldives. We’ve recently been enjoying some spectacular manta sightings in and around Hanifaru Bay, as this video shows.
If you’re wondering why the water doesn’t look as crystal-clear as you normally find in the Maldives, that’s because of the large amounts of plankton in the water. Plankton may make photos and videos look a bit fuzzy, but it’s the reason why the manta rays and whale sharks are here: they eat the plankton.
